Purpose

How we are changing the ground around us.

We connect people and places to create environmental, social and economic impact, now and for the generations after us.

An aerial view of a city block with trees and planting beds

These spaces work as urban lungs: they cut pollution, regulate temperature and offer a refuge of nature inside the city. They become meeting points that invite collective care and reconnect people with the natural cycle of things.

Every backyard is also a small engine of opportunity. Homemade sweets, greens picked that morning, fresh herbs: they cross the gate and turn into income, strengthening families and putting money back into the shops nearby.

The potential goes further. A backyard is also a stage for stories, a place that draws attention and produces content able to move a whole neighbourhood. Channelled well, that attention opens the door to partnerships with companies and brands looking to stand alongside genuinely sustainable practice.

So what starts small in one backyard gains weight in the community, inspires across the network and multiplies value, in economic terms and in symbolic ones, turning each backyard into an engine of local development.

Working the soil intelligently turns problems into lasting answers. A diversity of species strengthens the natural balance, cutting pests without relying on poison and giving the soil its vitality back. At the same time, ground that was abandoned or barely used finds a new purpose as gardens, orchards and living space. What used to attract trouble becomes a source of health, production and shared wellbeing.

The pace of the city charges a high price: anxiety, exhaustion, hurry without direction. In the backyard, life slows down. There, the simple act of tending a plant, watering a bed or picking fruit gives back to the body and the mind the thing that was missing: presence.

A backyard is not only green space, it is breathing space. It is where your head sorts itself out, where energy returns, and where we remember that living well starts with the essentials.

The generation in the middle has a clear job: to undo the hurry and the habits that pulled us away from what matters. Backyards are a simple, powerful way to do it. In them, children learn early where food comes from, what land is worth and what it means to look after something everyone shares.

This is not only about planting trees or picking fruit, it is about planting awareness. About teaching that we only have one house, that we are on the same side, and that together we can live better. A backyard is refuge and school at once: a place where life shows itself plainly and where the present makes peace with the future.

Stories from the community

Quintalistas spreading the culture.

Every backyard has its own story. Some are born to feed a family, others become the meeting point of the street, a small business, or the setting for content that inspires other people. What they share is the will to change the place they live in and to spread a way of life that is more human, more natural and more sustainable.

Valdomiro turned his backyard into a genuinely sustainable henhouse. The hens live loose, well looked after and off industrial feed, laying fresh eggs every day. As well as supplying the neighbourhood, he films his routine and shows that tradition, income and wellbeing can share the same ground.

We raise the hens loose here, the simple, natural way. An egg out of the backyard tastes different, and it helps me make a living.

Roberta turned her backyard into far more than a green space. She grows sugar cane without pesticides and makes organic rapadura the natural way, as it always should have been. Alongside the work she records the daily life of the place and turns it into content that inspires other people. It earns her a living, it passes on what she knows, and it gives her a life with more purpose.

I live free, I am happy, I love what I do, and thanks to Negócio de Quintal I can make a living from it.

From the fresh milk that comes out of the shed she makes cheeses and sweets that carry the soul of Minas. In the copper pan, time turns into doce de leite; in the wooden press, simplicity turns into award-winning cheese. Dona Helena has a backyard of memory that spreads across the table, an inheritance you can taste in every piece.

It means a lot to see people from everywhere tasting a small piece of my history.

FAQ

The questions we get most.

NDQ is a network that treats backyards as places of life, wellbeing and regeneration. We connect people, living assets and knowledge on a platform that makes every backyard part of something larger.

To grow wellbeing and regeneration through backyards, helping create green pockets, strengthen communities and inspire a different relationship between people and the places they live.

A backyard is therapeutic by nature. It improves mental health, lowers stress, brings families together, teaches children and puts fresh food on the table. By replacing neglected ground it also helps push back urban pests and supports public health.

Every active backyard helps reduce heat islands, increase biodiversity and improve the quality of the air and the soil. Added together, backyards form a network of environmental regeneration that benefits whole cities.

Technology organises backyards and multiplies what they can do. Through data, protocols and digital agents we turn information into practical knowledge, supporting the Quintalista in the daily work and strengthening what the network knows collectively.

We call assets everything a backyard is made of: trees, beds, animals, water, soil, tools, structures, even experiences. Each one can be registered, followed and valued, which makes every backyard both unique and useful to the network.

Any person or institution with a backyard, large or small, urban or rural, domestic or commercial. NDQ exists to include everyone, because every backyard counts towards a healthier, fairer, more regenerative future.
